During recent weeks, I’ve been making some small paintings (300 x 360mm) using collage and acrylic paint. The paintings are on 9 mm MDF board. The first three use some torn pages of short stories which are crumpled and stuck to the MDF and then overpainted so that occasional words can be read through the paint . The second three are similar, but the collage element is extended by the use of small pieces of kiln fired glass.
I have enjoyed using acrylic paints but I’m not entirely seduced by them. In the past I’ve used them for works on paper, rather like watercolour or gouache; because, left to their own devices, unlike oil paints, they will dry flat to the support. Though it’s possible to use specialised mediums to create impasto, ( thick, peaked applications of paint) it seems more natural to do that with oil paint. And, as I am interested in surface texture, oil paint is probably the way to go.
The group photograph, which I took with my phone, doesn’t show those paintings with glass elements. As soon as possible I will photograph all six paintings separately and update this site.
